Rug Rules: How to Refine Your Room With a Rug

Posted by:

Rugs are an easy and effective way to dramatically change the look and feel of a room. Rugs tend to be one of the last things you think about when considering decorating a room – walls and decor seem to always come first. We’ve put together some novice rules that will help you refine you room with a rug, the right way!

Before rug shopping, always measure you room first, then decide on the size and scale of your rug. When deciding on the right size and scale consider the effect that the rug will have. A rug can become an anchor point for your room and if the room is very large, rugs can create zones in the room’s spaces. If you want to put all the furniture in the room on top of a rug keep in mind the 2 foot rule, its recommended that your rug stay 2 feet off all the walls of the room. This is for balance and symmetry. If you are using the rug as an accent, consider what you want to accent and how the rug will match up. Putting a tiny rug in front of a oversized couch will do your space an injustice.

Texture & Color

Rugs come in all textures, and likewise many colors and patterns. Rugs can also create drama in a room; if you are going bold, remember to balance color and texture in the room. Your statement rug should balance up against the rest of your decor and furniture. If swatches of rugs are available, choosing a bold rug can be a lot easier. Lay all the samples on the floor in your area, step back at least ten feet, and see which one draws the eye in. Adding texture to a soft room can be a great way to create visual interest. In a neutral clean bathroom, a textured rug can really make the space exciting.

A rug is still a functional part of your room: it leads you to certain areas, protects your floor, and is walked and sat on. It’s important to consider if your rug will go into a high traffic area, and what its primary function will be. If this rug is in a high traffic area, like a hallway, or next to a bed, you’ll want to consider the material it is made from and how often you’ll need to clean it. Rug materials vary and some are made to withstand high traffic and are easier to clean and protect.
