How to Make a Bathroom Kid-Friendly

Posted by:

If you have young children or plan on starting a family in the near future, you may already know how important it is to make your home as suitable to their needs as possible. Kids learn most of their personal hygiene skills in the bathroom, so it’s essential to make the room accessible and comfortable for them. Check out these ideas on how to make your bathroom kid-friendly!

Low and high shelves

Lower shelves and drawers are great for items like bath toys and towels: things your child can safely access on their own. Medicine, thermometers, and similar bathroom objects should be placed on higher shelves since they can be dangerous if a child gets ahold of them.

Low vanity/sink

Installing the sink and/or vanity at a lower height than you would in a bathroom for adults gives your child easier access while brushing their teeth and washing their hands. If necessary, keep a step stool handy (like under the sink!) so your smaller children can reach the faucet as well.

Placing handles throughout the bathroom can give your child easier access to the fixtures they need to use. Handles near the toilet can help them pull themselves up and sit steadily while going to the bathroom, and handles near/in the bathtub will help when getting in or out on their own.

Fun color schemes

One of the most enjoyable parts of remodeling a bathroom is picking a color scheme! Use bright, bold colors and add child-themed wallpaper or decals to personalize the room. Chalkboard wall paint is also a fun option that gives your kids another reason to enjoy their bathroom.

Water-resistant flooring

We all know how much of a mess kids can make when playing around in the tub or sink. Don’t forget to protect your bathroom floors from water spills and splashes! Choose a type of bathroom flooring that won’t absorb water or allow water to leak below it, as this can cause mold, mildew, or other unhealthy bacteria to grow in your bathroom.
