Is Bamboo Flooring Right for Your Home?

You might have seen bamboo flooring at your friend’s house or on one of those HGTV shows—it looks stunning, doesn’t it? It easily passes for hardwood even though bamboo is technically a type of fast-growing grass. It’s easy to fall in love with bamboo flooring, but before you set your mind on it, it doesn’t hurt to do a little research. Our flooring experts from Genesis are here today to tell you everything you need to know about bamboo flooring in Maryland.

Benefits of Bamboo Flooring

  • It’s eco-friendly because the bamboo plant is a highly renewable resource that can reach maturity 5 times faster than trees.
  • It’s low-maintenance: just remove surface dirt and dust periodically and it will last you a long time.
  • It has better tolerance against water damage than most hardwoods and doesn’t react as much to both low and high humidity.
  • Some varieties of bamboo flooring are extremely durable and can rival the popular red oak. In fact, solid bamboo flooring ranks anywhere from 1300 to 1800 on the Janka hardness scale depending on the type of product.
  • It gives you that “something different” feeling if you are tired of traditional hardwood, and at a reasonable price too!
  • It comes in both lighter (natural bamboo) and darker (carbonized bamboo) colors, and can also be stained to achieve the shade you desire.

What’s the Catch?

As you can see, bamboo is a beautiful and functional flooring option for most rooms in your house. But, like any type of flooring, it does come with its own drawbacks. If you have large dogs or small children, you may find your bamboo flooring getting scratched and dented at a faster rate. The reason is that not all bamboo is equally strong, and some types are prone to denting when impacted by sharp objects, such as animal claws or heels.

But it all depends on the type of bamboo flooring you get. Generally speaking, carbonizing and staining of bamboo weakens its structure. Additionally, bamboo that was harvested prematurely won’t make very durable flooring. Strand-woven bamboo, on the other hand, is twice as hard as regular bamboo flooring due to its unique manufacturing process.
