How Your Dirty Carpet Affects Your Air Quality

Posted by:

Maintaining good indoor air quality (IAQ) is an extremely important part of maintaining your home’s safety. Having dirty carpets can make it difficult, if not impossible to keep your home’s air clean and safe. So the solution? Clean them!

Here’s a little guide with some information on what makes your carpet dirty, how to clean it, and how to keep it clean:

How Your Dirty Carpet Affects Your Air Quality

What can Having Bad IAQ Do to Your Health?

Bad indoor air quality can be very harmful for you and your family’s health. Bad indoor air quality can irritate eyes, noses, and throats. It can also cause shortness of breath, aggravate asthma, and other respiratory conditions. Bad IAQ can even affect your heart and cardiovascular system. The longer you are exposed, the worse the health effects. Make sure to keep your home’s IAQ high, or risk dealing with serious health effects.

What Makes My Carpet Dirty?

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) estimates that over 1.4 million non-industrial buildings have indoor air quality problems. Much of this comes from dirty carpets. Carpets act as dirt-traps. They capture and hold all kinds of dirt, dust, and particles. These particles get disturbed when people walk on the carpet and are then released into the air.

How to Clean Your Carpets

The best way to clean your carpets is through regular and thorough vacuuming. Vacuuming on a weekly or even daily basis can really go a long way. Make sure to remove any major spills or piles of debris as quickly as possible and do not allow them to sink into the carpet.

Another important part of cleaning your carpet is extraction. Doing an occasional hot water extraction, or “steam cleaning” on your carpet can not only clean it, but can also extend your carpets life.

How to Know if You Need a New Carpet

No matter how well your carpet has been maintained over the years, eventually, you’re going to need a new carpet. If your carpet has too many stains and you find yourself covering them up with furniture, it may be time to start shopping.

If you have mold under your carpet or it emits a foul odor, it might not be cleanable. Mold needs to be taken care of immediately, and oftentimes it is very difficult to remove odors. In both these instances, it might be better and easier to replace the carpet.
